NYOS Senior Orchestra Spring Concert

This spring NYOS Senior Orchestra, conducted for the first time by Catherine Larsen-Maguire present a programme designed to challenge and inspire its members with repertoire influenced by nature, sure to captivate its audience.

First, the Orchestra preform Einojuhani Rautavaara’s best-known work Cantus Arcticus, complete with recorded bird song captured, by the composer near the Arctic Circle. The orchestra then perform one movement from Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling orchestral suite Scheherazade.

For the final piece of the evening the Senior Orchestra perform Elgar’s playful yet mysterious composition Enigma Variations, in which the composer sketches short musical portraits of his friends and family as variations on a theme. A quaint idea by Elgar to amuse himself and those behind the scenes without affecting the music or the enjoyment of the listener.

Programme:

Einojuhani Rautavaara: Cantus arcticus, (Concerto for Birds and Orchestra)

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: ‘The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship’ from Scheherazade

Edward Elgar: Enigma Variations

Pre-Concert Performance:

As a special treat, the percussion section from NYOS Senior Orchestra will give a pre-concert performance of Steve Reich's fantastically hypnotic Music for Pieces of Wood live from 7.00pm in the Recital Room on the first floor of Glasgow’s City Halls.
