This spring, NYOS, Scotland’s national youth orchestra, will take to the stage at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on 11 April and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 12 April, presenting a programme that includes Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, and Elgar’s masterpiece Falstaff. The orchestra will be conducted by Jac van Steen and joined by award-winning mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston to perform Sieben Lieder, Alma Mahler’s gorgeous settings of seven poems.
Also, this April, the NYOS Development orchestra makes its triumphant return to Perth Concert Hall, conducted by NYOS Music Director Catherine Larsen-Maguire. This dynamic orchestra of young musicians aged 11-18 will transport audiences through urban and rural landscapes through the works of Avril Coleridge-Taylor, Daniel Kidane and Smetana. The orchestra will also be joined by NYOS alumnus Adam Lee for Oscar Navarro’s cinematic Clarinet Concerto.
For their summer concert, NYOS Development will bring an evocative programme to Dundee’s Caird Hall, in July, performing Tchaikovsky’s melodic Symphony No. 4 and Ida Moberg’s stirring Orchestral Suite: Sunrise. Conducting the orchestra, we are thrilled to welcome back Natalia Luis-Bassa, who has been working with Development musicians since the orchestra’s inception in 2023.
Finally, to close our the 2025 programme, our NYOS orchestra will be hitting the road and going on our first international tour for ten years! Kicking off at Perth Concert Hall on Friday 1 August, the tour will see concerts at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Saffron Hall, before finishing up in Berlin. For such an exciting adventure, we are very pleased to be presenting the world premiere of Jay Capperauld’s Galvanic Dances, a new concerto commissioned by NYOS that will feature accordionist and BBC New Generation Artist Ryan Corbett as soloist.
